New Leeds United head coach David Hockaday says he is looking forward to the prospect of working with Ross McCormack, amid much speculation surrounding the striker’s future.

McCormack, who topped the Championship’s scoring charts with 28 league goals last season, has already been the subject of a rejected £5million bid from Fulham, while Newcastle, West Ham and Cardiff have been among the other clubs reported to be keen on him.

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino has already stated he would only consider an offer from a ‘big team’ as he says the club have no need to sell the Scotland international who has another three years remaining on his current deal.

Hockaday, formerly in charge of Forest Green Rovers, was appointed as the Whites’ new head coach by Cellino last week and he is keen to have McCormack in his side next season.

"Ross is a Leeds United player who signed a four-year deal and has put it out that he is really happy here," Hockaday told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"The chemistry is right and when that is right for a player and he gets on well at the club and the club get on well with him, that’s great.

"He’s obviously an important Leeds player. But they are all important Leeds players and I am looking forward to coaching Ross and working with him."

Leeds are yet to bolster their squad this summer and the current players were faced with delays to be paid their wages at the end of May as a winding-up petition forced the club’s bank account to be frozen.

Despite the financial uncertainty, they have continued to be linked with a host of Italian players as well as Leyton Orient midfielder Romain Vincelot and Maidenhead United full-back Andre Blackman.

Hockaday said: "We are working very hard and as soon as we can make announcements, we will let the fans know as soon as possible. But we will be adding to the squad."
