Fulham have confirmed Luis Boa Morte will be out for six weeks with a fractured cheekbone.
The 29-year-old suffered the injury in an unfortunate clash of heads with team-mate Heidar Helguson in Sunday's 0-0 stalemate at Tottenham Hotspur.
Cottagers boss Chris Coleman had hoped his Portuguese forward might be able to play in a protective covering, but has now conceded defeat on the subject.
"Boa is out for about six weeks and we can't even get a mask to protect him because of the extent of the injury," he explained.
"It's quite deep set, so there's nothing we can do about it."
The news comes as yet another blow to the West Londoners who already have Papa Bouba Diop, Jimmy Bullard, Ahmad Elrich, Simon Elliott, Mark Pembridge and Philippe Christanval out.
While his crocked stars are all set to miss the Carling Cup clash with Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday, influential midfielder Diop and the versatile Christanval are set to return for Saturday's derby at home to champions Chelsea.
