Fulham have missed out on the capture of Portuguese defender Jose Fonte.Fulham have missed out on the capture of Portuguese defender Jose Fonte, but Cottagers boss Chris Coleman has been boosted by the news that Alain Goma is fully committed to the cause.
Fonte had been tipped to make a loan move to Craven Cottage after being identified by Coleman's network of scouts, but Fulham have been forced to shelve their interest in the 22-year-old.
"We wanted to sign Jose but have not been able to do that," said Coleman at a press conference to unveil new signing Simon Elliott. "We wanted to take a look at him but he was not allowed to train with us for various different reasons."
Coleman had hoped Fonte would provide competition for a defensive line which has come in for criticism in recent weeks.
Goma has been one of the players to come under fire in recent weeks and reports suggested he was looking to move on.
The Frenchman claims he was misquoted and is looking to secure a new deal, with his present contract up for renewal in the summer.
"I was very disappointed to read the article as it was not a fair reflection of what I said," he told the club's official website.
"I'm very happy at Fulham and in London and if the opportunity to stay was offered, it would be something that would make me very happy.
"Obviously it's my aim to play as long as possible and if it was not an option to stay at Fulham, then I'd consider playing elsewhere on a new adventure.
"But I love London - it's a wonderful, cosmopolitan city and everything you want is here.
"I think Fulham have played some very good football this season and I'm happy to be part of that.
"The most important thing is for the team to succeed so I shall continue to play my football and hopefully the future will be positive for me personally and for the club."
New Zealand midfielder Elliott is another player looking to fire Fulham up the table and he is eager to hit the ground running, having moved on from Columbus Crew.
"Signing for Fulham is an exciting move for me as I have always had an ambition to play in The Premiership," said Elliott.
"There is a great spirit around the camp here and the players have all been very welcoming, so I am eager to establish myself in the squad and to play in this fantastic league."
