Barry Robson has told
Sky Sports that he hoping he can lead Middlesbrough to promotion before he leaves for Major League Soccer.
Robson has already agreed a move to MLS and has signed a pre-contract with Vancouver Whitecaps and will move to Canada once his commitments with Boro are completed.
But the Scottish international hopes that he can leave Boro as a Premier League club, and he will be doing it as captain.
Robson has been handed the captain's armband by Boro boss Tony Mowbray, after skipper Matthew Bates was ruled out for the rest of the season.
"It was a family decision and something that me, my wife and our son wanted to do, but it was difficult because Middlesbrough have been great with me since I joined," he told
Sky Sports.
"I just felt that it was the right time for me to move on and try something new, so that is something to look forward to in the summer, but I've not given it much though yet as I've got enough on my plate here at Middlesbrough.
"I'd love to leave this club as a newly-promoted Premier League side because that it is what I set out to do when I joined the club.
"I hoped to play in the top-flight during my time here, but obviously that won't happen now.
"That is football for you, but hopefully I can help get them up before I go and making my final appearance at Wembley would be fantastic too.
"Obviously, we can still go up automatically, but it isn't going to be easy, so the play-offs might be a good option.
"We'll have to wait and see I guess because I don't like to look too far into the future and getting into the top six is going to be tough, never mind getting to Wembley, as there are so many teams fighting for it."
