Tony Mowbray: Not happy to go out of cup

Sky Bet

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray could not hide his disappointment after seeing his side bow out of the FA Cup to local rivals Sunderland.

The Black Cats booked their place in the fifth round of the cup courtesy of Stephane Sessegnon's late goal in extra time at the Riverside, giving Sunderland a 2-1 win and setting up a meeting with Arsenal.

And whilst Mowbray was proud of his side's performance, he insists his team can never be happy about losing.

"It's little consolation for me," he said of the performance.

"Our supporters would have expected us to do it.

"I want the players, the fans and the club to be disappointed if we lose any match, whether it's against Arsenal, Sunderland or Manchester United.

Winning mentality

"We need to develop a winning mentality."

"It's a local derby and whether there's one division or 20 between us, you would expect a Middlesbrough team to give Sunderland a really good game and there was never any doubt in my mind that we would do that.

"But extra-time was energy sapping and if the reward had been an FA Cup tie with Arsenal it would have been all worth it. Instead, we're disappointed.

"They have got some good players but generally we managed to see that off and create enough chances ourselves to have won the game.

"But there you go, that's football. It was a great strike but there was a lack of concentration. We've got some young players in there and it's a learning curve.

"We have to keep going and the good thing for me is they're in there listening and they will learn from it. We need to improve as a team and continue to strive to get better so when we get another opportunity we win it.

"We have to go to Ipswich now, five hours on a coach, and if it's not such a great performance full of energy, you'll know the reasons. But we'll give it our best to get a result."
