Gretar Steinsson wants to play in England later in his career after committing his immediate future to AZ Alkmaar.
The Iceland international was linked with Middlesbrough during the summer, but has extended his AZ contract until 2012.
The defender joined AZ during the 2005/06 season from Young Boys in Switzerland and had no qualms in prolonging his spell with the Dutch club.
"I want to become a key player for the club and I have so far not shown what I have got in me," Steinsson told the club's official website.
"I feel good in Alkmaar and I see no reason to leave.
"I have got the trust of Louis van Gaal and I think that I have made a lot of progress since I have played for AZ."
However, following the interest from Boro, Steinsson acknowledged a long-term wish to play in the Premier League.
He added: "That was nice to hear, but at that time I had already decided that I wanted to stay longer at AZ.
"Yes, eventually it's my ambition to play in England, but first I want to grab prizes with AZ."
