Southampton are set win the race to sign Middlesbrough's Andrew Davies.
Hull and Norwich both launched bids for Davies last week, but Saints have made a late move for the 22-year-old and are now favourites to land him.
The deal agreed by The Saints is a three-month loan deal with a view to a permanent deal in January.
"We've been speaking to Middlesbrough about Andrew and we're optimistic we can maybe do something," said Saints boss George Burley.
"It's an area where we are still looking to be stronger.
"Andrew is a natural defender, he likes to defend, he's young, British and needs to try to get games."
