Gareth Southgate paid tribute to Middlesbrough's battling qualities following the 2-2 draw with Newcastle.
Boro fell behind twice as Newcastle pressed for victory at The Riverside, but on both occasions they responded quickly.
Southgate was thrilled with the way his side secured a point, particularly because there were a number of players on show still carrying injuries.
"We showed great character, not just in coming back twice but also because we had players who probably shouldn't have been out there," said the Boro boss.
"We played really well because in a derby game sometimes it can be frantic and you don't put your foot on the ball."
A hero is born
Mido continued to make an impressive start to his Middlesbrough career as he scored for the second week in a row, and Southgate believes he will only get better.
"He's going to be a real hero with the fans because of his passion for the game," he enthused.
"He's had a big impact on the dressing room in a positive way."
Southgate also revealed that Jeremie Aliadiere had briefly been knocked out following a collision with Steven Taylor.
