Massimo Maccarone's agent has cast doubt on whether the Italian striker would launch a verbal assault on England manager Steve McClaren.
Maccarone's face was prominent on a number of back pages on Friday, after quotes attributed to him filtered their way to England from Italy.
According to reports, Maccarone took a swipe at McClaren's personal and managerial qualities while also taking current Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate to task.
Maccarone ended an unhappy spell at Middlesbrough during the week when moving to Siena and it was under McClaren and Southgate that his career stalled.
His agent Paolo Fabbri feels the comments are entirely out of character for Maccarone and believes the quotes may have been sensationalised.
"I don't think Massimo would use such strong words and phrases," he told Sky Sports News. "It is surprising, unusual and shocking language.
"Massimo is a polite person.
"He did have problems with Steve McClaren but these were as a coach, and not as a person.
"Massimo speaks very little English so I think this has been mis-translated."
