Ipswich Town's on-loan defender Matthew Bates could require a lengthy lay-off after suffering a knee injury.

Bates, who joined Ipswich from Middlesbrough earlier this month, was hurt during Town's 1-0 defeat at Barnsley.

He was stretchered off midway through the second half and the early signs are the teenager has suffered medial ligament damage.

The versatile defender will undergo a scan in the coming days as Ipswich anxiously wait for a clearer diagnosis.

"It looks like a medial ligament knee injury, but we will know more when we can Matt's knee," Ipswich's head of sports science Dave Williams told the club's official website.

"It is too early to tell how long he will be out for."

Bates was making just his second appearance for Ipswich and is due to stay on loan at Portman Road until January.
