Steve McClaren admits he was confident that Middlesbrough could end their jinx against Arsenal.

Boro had not scored at home to The Gunners in The Premiership in the past five seasons but changed the record with a 2-1 success.

The win comes on the back of a 3-0 home defeat to Charlton Athletic in their previous match and McClaren was buoyed by the players' attitude.

"I fancied us today, especially after surviving the first 15 minutes," McClaren told PremPlus. "What a fantastic reaction by the players after the Charlton game.

"To come back like that shows the strength of character in the dressing room.

"The Charlton game really knocked the confidence of the players and you saw that in the first 15 minutes but we survived that and they stuck in there, got the break and we got better and better as we went on.

"There were 14 heroes out there and you have to do that against a team like Arsenal."

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, with his first for Boro, and Massimo Maccarone grabbed the goals to sink Arsenal, with McClaren delighted with the duo's display.

He added: "They can score goals.

"Yakubu has got a proven record, Maccarone has come back from a year's loan and his attitude has been fantastic."
