Middlesbrough defender Emanuel Pogatetz has blasted reports suggesting that he criticised the town.

Reports last weekend quoted Pogatetz as ridiculing his new surroundings of Teesside.

Pogatetz was shocked at the reports and claims that his interview to an Austrian newspaper has been twisted by the English media.

"I spoke to a reporter from a small Austrian newspaper about how I was settling in at Middlesbrough. I didn't tell him what I thought about the town because he didn't ask me," Pogatetz told the club's official website.

"What I did tell him was that our training ground is not in the town itself, so I only go into Middlesbrough when we have a match. I can only guess that he has decided to add that the reason for this is the industry.

"It's ridiculous. Somebody has added new words to what I really said, twisting my words to mean something very different. I am angry that they have done this.

"Of course, I didn't come here for the scenery. I came here because I think Middlesbrough can do well this season and I can become a better player here.

"The truth is that I haven't really seen the town of Middlesbrough yet.

"What I do know is that the people have been very friendly to me since I came here.

"The fans and the club supported me through my ban and that meant a lot to me. I hope these stories will not affect what I hope will become a special relationship with the fans."
