Middlesbrough insist they will do what is right for Massimo Maccarone as the striker nears another loan deal with Siena.Maccarone spent the second half of last season with Siena, after a luckless first half of the campaign with Parma.
The Italian forward impressed with Siena and the Serie A outfit are hoping to keep Maccarone at the club next term.
Boro will not stand in Maccarone's way and they have allowed the 25-year-old to stay in Italy, rather than join their squad for pre-season training in Portugal.
Siena are favourites to land Maccarone, but there are other clubs interested and Boro chief executive Keith Lamb confirmed talks are ongoing.
"We are continuing our negotiations," said Lamb. "Nothing has been agreed yet.
"We are talking about options, what is best for Massimo, Middlesbrough second.
"We are endeavouring to find the right club for Massimo and we are looking at all options.
"Nothing is done or dusted but we have delayed Massimo's return here in the hope we can get something finalised."
Meanwhile, Boro boss Steve McClaren is expected to sign his new four-year contract upon the club's return from Portugal.
