Middlesbrough are closing in on close season target Emanuel Pogatetz.
Middlesbrough are closing in on Emanuel Pogatetz after Bayer Leverkusen gave the green light to a deal.
The full back has been on loan with Spartak Moscow but is known to be interested in pursuing his career in England.
After initially warning Boro and Fulham off moving for the Austrian defender, Bayer relaxed their stance with supremo Wolfgang Holzhauser admitting the player could leave for a fee in the region of é¼3 million.
Although Fulham are also pursuing Pogatetz, Boro are in pole position after Steve McClaren was first alerted to the 22-year-old during last season's Uefa Cup tie against the Teessiders when he was on loan with Grazer AK.
McClaren is thought to be determined to have another of his targets signed and sealed in the near future.
As reported in mid-May, Pogatetz was one of the Boro manager's priority signatures during the close season.
