Siena have revealed they would like to sign Middlesbrough striker Massimo Maccarone on a permanent basis.

Maccarone joined the Tuscan club in January, after a similar loan spell with Parma was cancelled.

The Italian international has impressed hugely for Luigi De Canio's side and has grabbed seven goals in just seven starts.

Siena are now set to open talks with Boro over a proposed deal - although much will depend on whether the Teessiders require Maccarone's services next season.

"I personally wanted Maccarone and I'll try everything to keep him with us," Siena president Paolo De Luca told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Boro are set to sign Nigerian Yakubu Aiyegbeni from Portsmouth in the summer, but there could still be room for Maccarone at the club if the likes of Joseph Desire Job and Szilard Nemeth are moved on.
