Middlesbrough have failed in a bid to sign Internazionale's Giorgias Karagounis.
Boro boss Steve McClaren is scouring the transfer market in a bid to bolster his injury-hit squad.
McClaren confirmed he enquired about taking the Euro 2004 winner on loan for the rest of the season, but Inter refused to let him go out on a temporary basis.
Karagounis is well down the pecking order at Inter, but the club are not willing to let him leave as they are still in the UEFA Champions League.
"We did make an enquiry for him (Karagounis)," McClaren told the club's official website.
"We looked at bringing him here on loan but Inter weren't interested in that arrangement so it's gone no further than that."
McClaren also played down speculation linking the club with Karagounis' team-mate Andy van der Meyde.
