Middlesbrough have confirmed that they have released Brazilian midfielder Ricardinho from the remaining two months of his contract.

The former Corinthians star signed for Boro in January, but he has failed to make the breakthrough.

The World Cup winner never made a first team display for The Teessiders, making the bench just once in the 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

"Ricardinho has been a little bit unlucky," said Boro manager Steve McClaren.

"We brought him in as cover for injuries and suspensions but not only have we not had those injuries in the last few months, but the players have all done well and we've been strong in that midfield area.

"Therefore he hasn't had the opportunity he'd hoped for and that we hoped we would be able to give him.

"With that in mind, Ricardinho naturally wants first team opportunities and we've mutually agreed that he should move on."

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move back to Brazil, but clubs from the Middle East and Japan are also believed to be interested.
