Maccarone progressing well

Middlesbrough should have striker Massimo Maccarone back in their squad in time for their next Premiership clash.

Boro entertain North East rivals Newcastle United on October 18 and Maccarone is pushing for a recall after hitting three goals in two reserve games.

Maccarone scored twice on Tuesday against Leeds' second string and looked sharp following his ankle injury.

Boro coach Steve Harrison is delighted with the way the Italian international has bounced back.

"I'm very pleased with Massimo's progress, both his attitude and his rehabilitation," said Harrison.

"He has showed he has lost none of his flair in front of goal. Now he needs another two weeks' hard work before we can consider him first team match fit."

Boro have just lost Joseph Desire Job to a serious knee injury and the return of Maccarone is a major boost for the Teesside outfit.
