SOUTHAMPTON are attempting to beat the transfer window deadline and have launched a renewed bid for Derby County defender Danny Higginbotham.

The Saints have already had one bid for Higginbotham rejected, but now The Rams have admitted that they have received a new offer from The Premiership club.

A statement on Derby's official website confirmed: "Derby County officials can confirm a new approach from Southampton for Danny Higginbotham.

"The Rams are currently considering The Saints' proposal."

The Saints are looking to bolster their squad as they push for a European place and see Higginbotham as the ideal signing.

Southampton supremo Rupert Lowe admitted they were looking to add to their squad.

"We have a player in mind and have taken a view on his value and his club also have a view," said Lowe, who would not admit the target was Higginbotham.

Meanwhile, Derby have confirmed that Middlesbrough's protracted move for Malcolm Christie and Chris Riggott is nearing a conclusion.

"We're entering the final stages of negotiations and believe a resolution is near," said Derby club secretary Keith Pearson.
