MASSIMO MACCARONE has earned a call-up to the Italy squad for Wednesday's Euro 2004 qualifier against Wales after Filippo Inzaghi withdrew due to injury.
Inzaghi has been plagued by a nagging foot problem and aggravated his injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia.
The Milan marksman admits he could face several weeks on the sidelines with the injury.
"I have a big pain and it's necessary to stop," confirmed Inzaghi.
"The Italian medical staff agree with me. I have to stop to avoid bad problems.
"I don't know how long it will be necessary. I'll probably have to miss a few Milan matches."
Middlesbrough striker Maccarone is the beneficiary of Inzaghi's misfortune and may be handed the chance to add to his solitary senior cap.
Maccarone made his Italy bow against England earlier this year and had been tipped as the leading candidate to replace Inzaghi for the Yugoslavian tussle if the former Juventus ace was ruled out.
