The 23-year-old has passed a medical and agreed personal terms with the North East club on Friday and has retuned to Spain, whilst his work permit is processed.
Geremi will link up with his new team-mates later this month, once his permit has been approved - which appears to be something of a formality as the Cameroon ace has barely missed a game over the previous two years for his nation.
Boro boss Steve McClaren hailed the signing of a player he has been chasing for 12 months.
"I'm delighted to have finally signed a player that I first wanted last summer, especially as several other top clubs were interested in him," said McClaren.
"Geremi's a quality player who can play anywhere in midfield.
"He's a good athlete, strong and quick. He's got an excellent footballing pedigree, with great experience at both club and international level.
"We've got him from the best team in Europe and, at 23, he's the right age too. I'm very pleased."
McClaren confirmed that the club are continuing to look for new players and he hopes to add to his squad further, before the start of the new campaign.
"We're continuing to work hard to bring in more players for the new season," he added.
Meanwhile, Boro have handed a trial to Paris Saint Germain midfielder Edouard Cisse following the Frenchman's come-and-get-me plea earlier in the week.
