ITALIAN international Massimo Maccarone is set to sign for Middlesbrough, according to the player's agent.

The Empoli striker is one of the hottest properties in Europe and they are believed to have accepted a ‚é¼13 million (£8.3 million) offer from Boro.

The striker only rejected a move to Birmingham last week, but now it is being suggested that the Teesside outfit are ready to succeed were The Blues failed.

"For Maccarone he is thinking of Middlesbrough and the transfer is concluded as far as we are concerned," said Silvano Martini.

"We must now discuss the duration of the contract with Middlesbrough, but he should be there for four or five years.

"We must insist however, that he never turned Birmingham down," Martin insisted to calciomanager .it

"But he is really happy with the prestigious offer and he will be wearing the colours of Boro."

Boro's strong Italian connections have seemingly played a major part in their move for Maccarone.

The Teesside club have already had four Italians in their squad over the past few years with Fabrizio Ravanelli, Marco Branca, Gianluca Festa and Benito Carbone all turning out at The Riverside in recent seasons.

Boro have a number of offers on the table for several players, but it seems unlikely that they will pursue their deal for South Afican Benni McCarthy should they land Maccarone.

Despite the insistence of Maccarone's agent that a deal will be done, it is still being reported in Italy that one of Serie A's elite will end up with the youngster.
