MIDDLESBROUGH head coach Terry Venables has admitted that the club have discussed the possibility of re-signing Fabrizio Ravanelli, but also added that a deal for the Italian seems unlikely.

As first revealed on planetfootball.com, Ravanelli`s discontent at Lazio led to the prospect of a sensational return to Teesside being set up, and the `White Feather` himself later expressed a desire to play at The Riverside again.

A timely return to the spotlight, in Wednesday`s Champions League clash against Leeds, saw the 32-year-old score in the 3-3 draw, and talk of a longer stint in the North of England has been rife.

However, Venables stated: "Ravanelli is an outstanding player and we have spoken about him.

"But I am not sure if the club would be prepared to consider signing him.

"We haven`t made an approach but we`re considering a lot of options, we`re not out of the business of adding to the squad and I would like to do so.

"As far as I know, though, there is no truth in him signing."

Those other "options" include Charlton`s Matthias Svensson, Millwall marksman Neil Harris and Brighton top scorer Bobby Zamora.

Svensson revealed on Thursday that Boro had a £2.5 million bid for him rejected this week, another story first published on this site, while the lower division duo have also been closely monitored by the Premiership side.
