European Qualifiers: Belgium's Vincent Kompany ruled out of Iceland friendly with calf strain

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is set to miss Belgium’s friendly with Iceland on Wednesday after undergoing a scan on a calf injury.

The 28-year-old sat out City’s draw with QPR on Saturday with the injury as the Premier League champions lost further ground to Chelsea in the title race.

Belgium have a key European Qualifier against Group B leaders Wales in Brussels on November 16 and the defender is facing a race against time to be fit for that.

If Kompany is ruled out, Belgian coach Marc Wilmots is likely to turn to in-form Southampton centre-back Toby Alderweireld to help fill the void.

Belgium’s game with Wales is live on Sky Sports 5 HD, with coverage starting from 4.30pm.
