Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart gave a brutally honest assessment of his team's performance in the damaging 2-1 Champions League defeat by CSKA Moscow, urging his team-mates to "stop living in the past".

City had Fernandinho and Yaya Toure sent off at the Etihad, with the result leaving them bottom of Group E and needing to win both of their remaining games to have any chance of making it to the knockout stages.

"We weren't good enough," Hart told Sky Sports News HQ. "We gave away far too many balls. There's no excuses really, we didn't deserve to win and it just got worse with the sendings-off.

"We can only look at ourselves when we don't perform in games like this - the fans were great and turned up and supported us and we've only got ourselves to blame. We've all got to take a long, hard look at ourselves and work out where we go from here."

City have taken just one point from their two matches against CSKA Moscow, having let a 2-0 lead slip in the reverse fixture in Russia two weeks ago.

Manuel Pellegrini says it is difficult to understand why Manchester City played so badly during their 2-1 defeat against CSKA Moscow.

"We've given ourselves a mountain to climb," added the England international.

"We had chances away at Moscow and then we've given them the victory here. It's not a good feeling but we're never going to give up, that's not who we are - we've got to remain positive.

More from Man City V Cska Moscow

"It's a low moment and we've put ourselves in a really weak position in the group. We've proved in the past we're more than capable of producing really good performances but we need to stop living in the past and make it happen."

Toure, who stroked home a free-kick to equalise for City after Seydou Doumbia's first goal of the night had put CSKA in front, apologised to fans for his red card.

The Ivory Coast international was already on a booking, but received a straight red for a blatant shove on Roman Eremenko.

"City fans - I am sorry for my red card. I feel it is important to apologise for this," he wrote on Twitter.
