Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes that Joe Hart being "cocky" helps the goalkeeper perform at the top level.
The claim came in response to comments from Roy Keane in which he indicated that the City and England goalkeeper had become "a little too cocky".
Mancini feels that a degree of arrogance is necessary, and is a trait that all goalkeepers portray.
"Every keeper is like this. It is important because if not, you should choose another position. If you want to be a keeper you should be cocky," Mancini said.
"Joe is a good guy, he works very hard for this, he wants to improve.
"Remember last week, Rooney on Twitter said Joe Hart is the best keeper in the world. And now he is cocky.
Mancini also dismissed claims that Hart's mistake for England on Wednesday would affect his goalkeeper.
"It is my opinion Joe Hart is the best keeper in England and one of the best in Europe and sometimes the keeper can make a mistake, but that is normal."
He added: "Joe is strong enough for this. He knows he is one of the best but if you want to continue to be the best you should work very hard.
"Everyone can make a mistake, it is impossible to be perfect. Only Mario is perfect every day!"
Meanwhile, the Italian believes that there should be the provision to move non-televised Premier League games from Saturdays to Sundays if there are delays like those suffered by his England players during the week.
"I think sometimes when this situation happens we can move our game from Saturday to Sunday. This is easy because we are not on TV and we play at three o'clock Saturday.
"But I am not disappointed. I am worried because Joe, James, Joleon...today [Friday] is the first day training and we play tomorrow."
