Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club want to keep striker Samuel Eto'o - but not at any price.
The Cameroon international - a reported Man City target - only has one year remaining on his contract with the European champions.
Laporta hopes the striker will stay at the Camp Nou but insists his new contact must fit into the club's existing wage structure.
He said: "A lot of clubs would like Eto'o in their team.
"We will do our best in order to renew his contract because he, in my opinion, is the best striker in the world."
Laporta added that extending his contract "depends on two parties, but we have a wage structure that we will respect."
He added: "We would like to renew the contract with Eto'o but not at any price because in this global economic crisis we have to be an example as well.
"I hope that he understands, and we will see in the next weeks."
