Dietmar Hamann believes Mark Hughes will prove an excellent replacement for Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Former Germany international optimistic about future at Eastlands

Manchester City midfielder Dietmar Hamann admits he believes Thaksin Shinawatra was wrong to sack Sven-Goran Eriksson, but believes Mark Hughes will prove an excellent replacement. City started last season in superb form but, as they failed to maintain their good start and fell into mid-table, the former England boss was dismissed at the end of the season. Many of the club's fans and players have shown their support for the Swede and believe the sacking was unnecessary but, while Hamann agrees the decision was 'harsh', he is convinced Hughes will be able to take the club forwards. "Sven did a good job last year and I think it was a bit harsh to sack him," he told the Manchester Evening News. "The chairman made a decision and he got a very good replacement in Mark Hughes, who did a great job at Blackburn."
