WATFORD have joined the race to sign Gillingham hot-shot Robert Taylor as Manchester City`s bid to sign the in-form striker looks to have collapsed.

Graham Taylor is now likely to contact his namesake Peter at The Priestfield Stadium after The Hornets` number two Kenny Jackett made an enquiry concerning his availability.

An auction may develop for the services of the former Brentford idol with an un-named Premiership side also believed to be monitoring the situation. City boss Joe Royle has been frustrated in his bid to land the player after Gillingham chairman Paul Scally insisted on a fee well in excess of £1 million for the man who scored twice in the FA Cup win over Darlington at the weekend.
