Newcastle United have made QPR striker Charlie Austin their top transfer target this summer as new head coach Steve McClaren looks to bolster his side.

Austin is currently with the England squad after an impressive debut season in the Premier League where he bagged 18 goals for the Loftus Road club, which still was not enough to save Chris Ramsey's side from relegation.

Sky sources understand Newcastle are in talks with Austin's representatives over a potential move to St James' Park.

The 25-year-old is McClaren's top signing target after taking over as head coach this week after leaving Derby County.

Austin has completed a remarkable journey from non-league football and could make his debut for the national side when they take on Slovenia in their European Qualifier fixture on Sunday.

The striker joined QPR from Burnley in August 2013 after scoring 45 goals in 90 appearances for the Clarets.
