Steve McClaren is edging closer to becoming the new head coach at Newcastle United, according to Sky sources.

It is understand the 54-year-old former England and Derby County manager held talks with the St James' Park board earlier this week before going on holiday.

He is the favourite to take over from John Carver, who is likely to revert to his position as coach following talks with managing director Lee Charnley on Tuesday.

McClaren, who had been in charge at Derby since September 2013, left the Sky Bet Championship club last week having seen his side's promotion push falter as they finished eighth in the table.

He had been linked with a move to St James' Park in April as Newcastle endured a torrid end to the campaign but ultimately Carver was entrusted with securing their Premier League survival, which was sealed against West Ham United on the final day of the season.

Patrick Vieira, an elite development coach at Manchester City, had also been linked with the vacant post on Tyneside.
