Despite being suspended for the Capital One Cup final, Nemanja Matic managed to injure himself in the post-match celebrations, after Chelsea beat Tottenham.
According to Jose Mourinho, Matic - who changed from his suit into a full Chelsea strip for the trophy presentation - hurt his ankle because he hadn't taped up his shin-pads.
Matic isn't the first footballer to hurt himself in embarrassing circumstances, though...
Santiago Canizares
The five-time La Liga winner spent his entire career trying to become Spain’s first choice goalkeeper, and heading into the 2002 World Cup, Sanitago Canizares was just that.
However, in an incredible twist of fate, the Valencia shot-stopper dropped a bottle of aftershave on his foot at Spain’s pre-tournament training camp, severed a tendon in his right foot and missed Spain's campaign in Japan and South Korea.
"I do not consider myself to be unlucky by any means,” Canizares said. We beg to differ.
Darius Vassell
Footballers get a reputation for their lack of intelligence on occasion, and Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell did little to dispel the myth after a peculiar do-it-yourself injury.
Suffering from a swollen big toe, the former England striker tried to remedy the situation by drilling a hole into his foot to drain the excess blood out.
He made the situation much worse, and ended up seeking professional help. Always leave it to the experts, Darius.
Martin Palermo
Famous for missing three penalties in one match in 1999, two years later Martin Palermo, nicknamed “Loco” - "Crazy" in English - lived up to his reputation as he exuberantly celebrated an extra-time goal while playing for Villarreal.
After netting the winner against Levante in the Copa del Rey, the Argentine jumped into the crowd, only to see the wall collapse and his leg become crushed.
He broke his tibia and fibia, and missed the 2002 World Cup as a result. Ouch.
Steve Morrow
The very definition of ecstasy to agony. Steve Morrow was the unlikely hero as he scored his first ever Arsenal goal to clinch victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the 1993 League Cup final at Wembley.
However, in the post-match celebrations, Tony Adams picked up the 22-year-old, only to drop him, with the landing breaking Morrow’s collarbone - an injury that would mean he would miss the upcoming FA Cup final against the same opposition.
Liam Lawrence
A sprained ankle is one of the most common problems for sports people, but the circumstances surrounding Liam Lawrence’s injury were anything but ordinary.
Making a late night dash to the bathroom, the Stoke midfielder collided with the family dog, and went tumbling.
"I don’t think anything is broken, but it’s very disappointing,” proclaimed his far from pleased boss Tony Pulis.
Philippe Mexes
The eccentric French defender is rarely far from the headlines, but one injury had the Italian media baffled in 2013.
Reports started to escalate that the AC Milan centre-back was suffering from central serous retinopathy - caused by spending too much time on sunbeds.
The furore intensified after he appeared to be on the bronzed side after returning to the team. All very embarrassing.
Kirk Broadfoot
Poached eggs don’t often cause much harm, but don’t tell that to Kirk Broadfoot.
The Scotland defender was inspecting two eggs he had just poached in his microwave when one of them blew up and squirted scalding hot water into his face, and resulted in a trip to hospital. No lasting physical damage was done, but the ego took a severe dent.
Alessandro Nesta
He is a regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation, with a will to win that helped him achieve a great deal of accolades in his career.
However, Alessandro Nesta’s competitive streak got the better of him on an all-night Playstation session. The Italian ruptured one of the tendons in his left thumb and was out for a month, with surgery required. Game over.
