Is the era of Kevin Keegan's entertainers the greatest in Newcastle United's past or do you prefer the history of Frank Watt and Joe Harvey? Sky Sports wants to establish the best manager through the years at Newcastle and we want your help. Kevin Keegan (1992-1997 & 2008)
The former Ballon d'Or winner arrived at St James' Park in 1992 having enjoyed much success with the club as a player in the 1980s. Keegan promoted an entertaining brand of football and won promotion with the Magpies in his first full season in charge. The emphasis on attacking football continued in the top flight and the 1995/96 season saw the club challenge Manchester United for title, only to blow a 12-point lead and finish second to the Old Trafford side. Keegan resigned in 1997 but return in 2008 to the delight of Newcastle fans. His return was short-lived, however, as the former England manager resigned again in September of the same year.
Sir Bobby Robson (1999-2004)
Robson returned to the North East in 1999 to manage his boyhood club after a career that had seen him enjoy success at the likes of Ipswich Town, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven as well as the England national team. He saved Newcastle from relegation in his first season and by the end of his third campaign finished fourth to earn a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round. A third-placed finish followed in 2002/03 and Robson guided the team to the second group stage of the Champions League. He was relieved on his duties in September 2004 after the team failed to win any of their opening four league fixtures.
Frank Watt (1895-1935)
Technically Watt was never manager of the Tyneside outfit but held the position of secretary from 1895 until 1935, with the first official Newcastle manager named in 1930. The Scotsman was, though, in charge of a committee that ran the side and helped them to four league titles and two FA Cups before the role of manager was introduced. The team, assembled entirely by Watt, achieved his aim of being "the best team in the country" for a number of years of his reign.
Joe Harvey (1962-1975)
With Watt never officially given the title of manager, Newcastle's longest serving manager is Joe Harvey. A former Newcastle player, Harvey returned as manager in 1961 following their relegation to Division Two. Harvey rebuilt the side, bringing in the likes of Malcolm MacDonald and Jimmy Smith as he brought the club back to the top flight. Whilst domestic success eluded the Magpies, Harvey led them to the 1969 Fairs Cup.
