Peter Lovenkrands is hopeful Newcastle can emulate Birmingham's shock success by lifting the Carling Cup this season.

Striker tips Toon for Carling Cup run

Peter Lovenkrands believes Newcastle have the potential to lift the Carling Cup this season as they face Nottingham Forest in the third-round. Newcastle's unbeaten start to the new season has lifted them to fourth in the Premier League table and the mood in the Toon camp is increasingly upbeat. Speaking to The Shields Gazette, the Dane said: "Last year Birmingham won against Arsenal in the final - nobody expected them to win anything." Inspired by the Blues' victory last season, Lovenkrands knows they have the strength to go all the way. "It's a good competition to be part of, and we can do well in it. We have a squad to that - we've got a big squad - and there are a lot of players who are dying to play." The 31-year-old is hoping to prove instrumental in the Magpies' attack on Tuesday night, along with the returning Hatem Ben Arfa. "There'll be people trying to prove themselves in front of the gaffer. "It'll be a great contest, and hopefully we can move onto the next round." Newcastle go to the City Ground after a winning goal from Sammy Ameobi in extra-time against Scunthorpe sent Alan Pardew's side through to the next round.
