But St Etienne deny contact with Newcastle

Blaise Matuidi is flattered to be linked with a move to Newcastle, but St Etienne insist they have not been contacted. Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with the France international in recent months, but Newcastle look set to push ahead with a move for the 24-year-old. Matuidi is also attracting attention from the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Lyon and Roma, but he admits England is an appealing prospect. "I am flatered by the interest from clubs abroad, and I have always loved the Premier League," he said. "It is the best league in the world, so exicting, and I really want to be part of that one day, however St Etienne has its say about that."

Rumours

On Newcastle specifically he added: "They are one of the big clubs in England but, like I said, it is all rumours at the moment, but you never know." St Etienne themselves responded to the Newcastle rumours by releasing a statement confirming no bid has been made. "To date ASSE [St Etienne] has had no contact with the English club [Newcastle]... the club's management will observe the utmost discretion in the transfer market, and confidentiality is one of those rules for success in this area," it read. St Etienne, though, did confirm Matuidi's release clause was set at €15million - €13million cash with €2million in add-ons.
