Pardew: Set to become Newcastle boss

Sky Bet

Sky Sports News understands Newcastle United will confirm the appointment of Alan Pardew as the club's new manager on Thursday.

Pardew quickly emerged as a leading candidate to take charge at St James' Park following Chris Hughton's dismissal on Monday.

Several names had been linked with the position, but it appears owner Mike Ashley has plumped for the qualities of Pardew.

The 49-year-old has been available since leaving Southampton in the early weeks of the season, having won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last term.

He started his managerial career at Reading and has previous experience of the Premier League from his spells at West Ham United and Charlton Athletic.

Poll results

However, it appears that Pardew could prove to be an unpopular appointment judging by the current results of skysports.com's poll on who should be Newcastle's next manager.

With over 38,000 votes cast, Pardew has received just over five per cent of the support after polling a little over 2,000 votes.

Former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is the preferred choice, while Martin Jol and Alan Shearer are also more popular contenders than Pardew.
