Chris Hughton believed his side had deserved a point after watching Newcastle come from two goals down to draw with Wigan.
Former Newcastle player Charles N'Zogbia notched a quick-fire first-half brace (22, 23) to put the Latics firmly in control.
But substitute Shola Ameobi headed home on 72 minutes to give the home side hope before skipper Fabricio Coloccini earned a point at the death.
Hughton told Sky Sports: "(It was) a point and very well deserved. We committed a little bit of suicide in that first half period up against a very good Wigan side that play a system that's a well drilled system and they've got good players to play that system.
"But we were comfortable enough, even though we didn't keep the amount of possession we would have liked and in a mad couple of minutes we gave away two very poor goals and of course at two-nil down you know its going to be very difficult to get back from that."
He added: "Its about belief, you have to send the team out with a belief in that second half that you can get back into this game.
"But is always the goal, the first goal that gives them that belief and willingness to want to go on and perhaps get an equaliser and maybe even win the game.
"I think once Shola's goal went in it was a dangerous period because of the way that they play, when you're pushing forward to get that equaliser there's every chance you can leave yourself open to concede a third goal.
"But we got that one at a good time and it was well deserved on the balance of play."
