Magpies boss dismisses links with Raul, Ben Arfa, Campbell and co

Chris Hughton has played down speculation linking Newcastle with a host of big names, including Raul. The Magpies are keen to bolster their ranks this summer, as they prepare for life back in the Premier League, but have adopted a cautious approach to their dealings so far. That has done little to stop the incessant rumours, though, with numerous players tipped to be on their way to St James' Park. Among those generating the most publicity are Real Madrid legend Raul, Scunthorpe frontman Gary Hooper, former Manchester City striker Benjani and Marseille playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa. However, Hughton insists there is no substance to any of those reports, telling The Journal: "It's natural that we get linked with players but none of those names are accurate.

Wrong

"Raul would have to take a huge pay cut to come here - I don't think he's going to do that! "The Benjani rumour is just wrong - he hasn't been training with us and there is nothing in the Gary Hooper rumour either. "I read about Ben Arfa. He is a cracking player and it's nice to see us linked with him, but there has been absolutely no contact there whatsoever." Hughton has also sought to curb the rumours linking Newcastle with ex-England international Sol Campbell. He added: "I think people have picked up on my relationship with Sol and him being available and come up with that one. "He is a good player but at the moment there's nothing to say on it. There hasn't been any progress."
