Ryan Taylor has been told that he remains an important member of Newcastle's squad as the Magpies seek to establish themselves back in the Premier League.
The former Wigan man, who feels more at home at right-back but is regarded as a right winger by manager Chris Hughton, played in five different positions last season.
His versatility was an important factor for the Magpies as they clinched promotion back to the Premier League.
And Hughton sees the 25-year-old as a key contributor, but warned he may have to be patient for starting opportunities.
"Ryan will get his fair share of chances. He missed out a bit in the second half of the season when Wayne Routledge came in and he didn't get the amount of games he probably wanted to get," Hughton told The Chronicle.
"But when a team is winning it's hard to make changes every time you pick the side."
Hughton added: "He's a good player and has plenty of Premier League experience to boot.
"When he looks back on last season he played his part and in a big amount of the games.
"It's not just about the starting XI, it's a squad game and everybody knows they can't play every game."
