Hughton surprised to be linked with Wigan midfielder

Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton is not planning a loan move for Wigan Athletic's out-of-favour midfielder Jason Koumas. Hughton's Wigan counterpart Roberto Martinez is prepared to let Koumas head out on loan and has received interest from two Championship teams. Koumas' former club West Bromwich Albion have held talks over a deal, while promotion rivals Newcastle had been linked with a bid. However, Hughton was surprised to learn of the Magpies' alleged interest in the 30-year-old and has been quick to dismiss talk of a deal for the former Tranmere Rovers man. "There is nothing in that one," Hughton told the Evening Chronicle. "When I saw that we had been linked that was honestly the first I knew about it. "He's a good player, but not one that I think will be coming here." Koumas has started only six games in the Premier League for Wigan this season and his only appearances in 2010 have come in the FA Cup.
