Midfielder demands united front at St James' Park

Newcastle United midfielder Geremi insists that the troubled Tynesiders can win the Carling Cup to lift the gloom around St James' Park. Managerless Newcastle face a crunch third-round tie at home to fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham with Geremi calling for a united front. He said: "We must all give everything against Tottenham in this competition. It is one of two competitions we can actually win despite what has gone on this season. "I think it is important for everybody to see that right now. I plead with our fans to realise how important it is to the club and how important they are to us and that we need them right behind us. "We are at home and we need them behind us for 90 minutes."

Stick together

Geremi insists that the Newcastle players are still pulling together, despite the turmoil off the pitch as owner Mike Ashley seeks a buyer, and wants the fans to follow suit at a critical phase of the season. He told the Evening Chronicle: "It's so important that we stick together. That is what we have been doing as players in the dressing room. "And that is what we need the fans to do who come to the game against Spurs. It is the most important moment of the season. "There are a lot of things that have happened at the club recently but we need to stick together."
