Senegal defender joins Newcastle

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Senegal defender Lamine Diatta. The Magpies have been locked in talks with the powerful African stopper since last month after he impressed whilst on trial - a story first reported by skysports.com. Diatta, was available on a free transfer after leaving Turkish club Besiktas, and he has now signed on a deal until the end of the season. Manager Kevin Keegan welcomed Diatta's arrival as he looks to improve the club's defensive record. "We have not got much cover if we pick up any more injuries to our defenders, and Diatta will provide this," said Keegan.

Future

Diatta has been signed in time to make his debut at Liverpool at the weekend but it remains to be seen whether he will be involved. The player himself was pleased to have sealed his switch. "We will discuss my long-term future when the season ends," he told L'Equipe. "I don't know if I'll be able to start against Liverpool on Saturday because my new club have to receive a letter from the Turkish FA before Friday."
