Sam Allardyce has backed Steven Taylor to reclaim his place in the Newcastle United defence.

Taylor lost his place in the Magpies' starting XI following the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City when a fragile all-round defensive display saw his side surrender an early lead.

The Newcastle boss has since been forced to clear up reports that he had singled out the centre-back for criticism.

No doubt

Allardyce has now moved to voice his confidence in Taylor's ability, and believes the youngster has what it takes to work his way back into the team and stay there.

"Steven will fight for his place, I have no doubt about that whatsoever," he said.

"I have had a chat with him and he has taken it very well.

"I know he is very disappointed at not being involved at the moment, but he is a young player for the future for us and I think he will get back in.

"When he does get back in, I hope he keeps the shirt."
