Newcastle are rumoured to be considering a bid for Internazionale full-back Marco Andreolli.
Magpies chief Glenn Roeder has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his rearguard and he has been linked with a whole host of defenders in recent weeks.
Blackburn's Lucas Neill is still thought to be a target for Newcastle, but Andreolli has emerged as another option.
"The situation is complex," Andreolli's agent Patrick Bastianelli told The Guardian. "The boy has offers from abroad, in particular from Marseille and Villarreal, while in Italy there is strong interest from Torino and Empoli.
"But Newcastle remain favourites to sign my player."
The 20-year-old only signed a long-term deal in October and Inter are likely to keep the interested parties waiting before making a decision on his future.
"We will make a decision on the future of Andreolli on 29th January," Inter director of sport Marco Branca told the club's website.
