Glenn Roeder has spoken of his delight at seeing David Edgar cap a New Year's Day to remember by grabbing Newcastle's equaliser against Manchester United.On a dream home debut the teenage Canadian scored a 72nd minute leveller that earned Newcastle a hard fought point against the Premiership leaders.
Edgar was only in Newcastle's starting line-up because of a series of injuries which have decimated Roeder's options, but the Toon tactician is more than pleased with the contribution of his starlet.
"It was very, very pleasing to see that ball hit the back of the net, it goes without saying," said Roeder.
"Every person has dreams in their life and for very few, those dreams come true.
"I would say today for David Edgar and his father Eddie, who was here to see his son play, that is one of the few occasions when a dream has come true."
Prior to kick-off and Roeder lost the services of Nicky Butt to injury and whilst conceding this made the efforts of his side all the more remarkable, he insists he was always confident his players could grind out a result against Sir Alex Ferguson's in-form leaders.
Roeder added: "I said to them before the game and I reminded them of it afterwards, anything is achievable in life.
"I would say that is as well as Newcastle have done against Manchester United for a while.
"I like to think the fans have seen a good game today and have gone away happy.
"I am a greedy person and it would have been nice to have taken three points, but in the circumstances, losing Nicky Butt two hours before kick-off - and he was so upset about that - we know it is a very good point."
Edgar spoke after the game of how playing in front of a packed St James' Park saw him realise a long-standing dream.
"It was a big thing just to be called in and I took my chance," he told Sky Sports 1.
"It was unbelievable, playing in front of 52,000 Geordies is everything I dreamed of."
