Shearer's career could have reached a premature conclusion after the Magpies skipper injured his knee in Monday's derby win at Sunderland.
The former England international is waiting on a scan to learn the full extent of the damage and if the injury is serious enough to prevent him from turning out again this term.
He appeared at an awards ceremony in London on Tuesday night having arrived in the capital on crutches and Roeder appeared pessimistic about Shearer's prospects of being available for the closing games of the campaign.
There have been suggestions that, even if Shearer is unable to play a full game before his intended retirement at the end of the season, he could be given a chance to say farewell to the St James' Park faithful.
A late cameo as a substitute in the last game at home to champions-elect Chelsea has been mooted as an opportunity for Shearer to make his final professional appearance.
But Roeder wants to discuss the situation with his captain before making a decision on that issue, hinting he will not allow emotion to creep in.
"That's to be discussed," Roeder told Sky Sports News about a possible substitute appearance for Shearer.
"At the moment, his knee's very painful. I think if you've seen him tonight, he's not doing the best, even walking.
"There are only a couple of weekends to go and we mustn't forget The Premiership is serious business.
"Alan Shearer is the ultimate professional and I will have to talk to him about that as well."
