Shola Ameobi has backed Glenn Roeder to get the Newcastle manager's job on a permanent basis.

The former England Under-21 star has bagged two goals in Newcastle's last five games and looks revitalised under Roeder - who has guided The Magpies to five wins in their last six matches.

Roeder has rarely been mentioned as a genuine candidate for the St James' Park hot-seat - with the likes of Martin O'Neill, Sam Allardyce, Mark Hughes, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Claudio Ranieri all mentioned.

However, Roeder's reign with Alan Shearer as his assistant is proving to be a huge success and chairman Freddy Shepherd is believed to be now considering him for the role.

"Glenn Roeder has been fantastic for me as a player," beamed Ameobi.

"He has instilled confidence in each and everyone of us.

"I think that's showing through. He will back you all the way and we are all playing for him, and everyone has seen the results.

"Apart from the football side, he really is a fantastic guy and he knows what he is talking about, and he is an excellent manager who is really doing his stuff.

"Who can blame him if he is thinking about wanting the job permanently? I hope he does decide to stay because he is the man to take us forward."
