Shearer to miss Blues trip

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness will not risk Alan Shearer against Chelsea.

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness will not risk Alan Shearer against Chelsea at the weekend.

The international break allowed Shearer to head to Germany for minor hernia surgery and it had been hoped he would be ready to face the Premiership champions at Stamford Bridge.

However, Shearer is just short of full fitness and Souness feels it would be unwise to pitch him in against Chelsea - with his return likely to come against Everton the following week.

Stephen Carr and Albert Luque will also be on the sidelines at the weekend, although the pair are close to returning from hernia and hamstring injuries respectively.

"We won't have Al or Stephen available for Chelsea, although I'm hopeful they may be back for the following week at Everton," Souness told the club's website.

"It's the same with Luque. He's nearly ready to come back."

Lee Bowyer is expected to return following six weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury.
