Blues sign Butt

Birmingham have signed Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt on a year-long loan.

Birmingham City have signed Newcastle United midfielder Nicky Butt on an initial year-long loan.

The former Manchester United man endured a difficult first season at St James' Park after spending his entire career at Old Trafford.

Blues have bagged Butt initially on loan with a view to sealing a £2 million deal come the season's end.

Butt was in Newcastle's squad to face Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday, but was withdrawn in order to seal his move to St Andrews.

The 30-year-old has now linked up with former Red Devils colleague Steve Bruce, who manages the Midlanders.

"Birmingham have agreed a deal with Newcastle for midfielder Nicky Butt on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season worth £2 million," read a Newcastle statement on their official website.

"The 30-year-old will join up with former Manchester United team-mate and Birmingham manager Steve Bruce in the deal that brings Nicky Butt to St. Andrews."

Bruce views the England international as a perfect replacement for Robbie Savage, who was sold to Blackburn Rovers in January.
