Charlton are in talks to sign Newcastle ace Darren Ambrose.

The Magpies have agreed an undisclosed fee with The Addicks for Ambrose and they have given the London outfit permission to talk to the player.

Ambrose is thought to be keen on a move away from Newcastle despite earning a regular run in the side at the back end of last season.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley is keen to bolster his midfield and he is big admirer of Ambrose.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd admitted Charlton had agreed a fee for Ambrose and revealed that the player was in talks over a possible switch to The Valley.

"Charlton have made an offer that matches our valuation of the player," Shepherd told the club's official website.

"We have given Darren permission to speak to Charlton to discuss a possible move."

Meanwhile, Shepherd has wished Craig Bellamy all the best after the Welshman completed his move to Blackburn.

The move ends an acrimonious split between Bellamy and manager Graeme Souness after the pair fell out last season.

"It has been a difficult time for everyone concerned, but Craig has now completed his move to Blackburn, and we wish both him and the club all the best for the future," added Shepherd.
